Over 150 new cities are currently being planned worldwide. They claim to be a panacea for all our current problems, such as overpopulation, pollution, and climate change. One of these urban megaprojects is “Forest City”. On four artificial islands off the coast of Malaysia, a paradise is to be created: a car-free city, smartly networked and green from top to bottom – a true Ecotopia? In my video installation ANOTHER ECOTOPIA, I critically examined whether such new planned cities can truly contribute to solving our problems.

ANOTHER ECOTOPIA is a project of DenkRaum at CAU Kiel. As an associated artistic member, I engaged in dialogue with researchers from various disciplines, including Prof. Dr. Sarah Moser from the New Cities Lab at McGill University in Montreal. The resulting video installation was exhibited in February 2023 in an empty space in downtown Kiel, reflecting the core question of how we want to live in the future.
