Utopia is dead vol. I

Utopia is dead vol. I, Photography, 150cm x 450cm, 2018

The wall installation “Utopia is dead vol. I” is a panoramic image. It is made up of 72 individual A3 prints that are glued to the wall. Depicted is a field of rubble from countless destroyed models that have been created over time in my studio. These models serve as extras in my cinematic works. With this piece, I address the pursuit of a better world and its constant failure. The panorama, for example, evokes associations with The Sea of Ice by Caspar David Friedrich. It reminds us of the ultimate failure of hope, of dreams, or the better elsewhere. However, rubble landscapes can also signify a new beginning. My greatest hope is that the utopia of a better world is not dead, but that now, more than ever, we must do everything in our power to not lose hope. This is especially relevant in light of current issues like the pandemic, the climate crisis, or war.
